Spheric Vs Toric Contact LensesUpdated a year ago
All lenses sold on our website are spheric lenses. We do not offer toric lenses, which are used for wearers who have astigmatism.
If your contact lens prescription contacts values for the AXIS and CYL components, you may require toric lenses depending on the severity of your astigmatism. If you are unsure, please consult your optical professional for guidance.
Below is a short summary of the two types of contact lenses:
Spheric Contact Lenses
Purpose: Spheric contact lenses are primarily used to correct common refractive errors such as nearsightedness (myopia) and farsightedness (hyperopia).
Design: These lenses have a uniform curvature across their entire surface, resembling a slice of a sphere. This consistent curvature ensures that light entering the eye is focused correctly onto the retina, providing clear vision.
Usage: Spheric lenses are suitable for individuals with straightforward prescriptions and no significant astigmatism. They come in various materials, including soft and rigid gas permeable (RGP) options, and can be found in daily, bi-weekly, or monthly disposable formats.
Toric Contact Lenses
Purpose: Toric contact lenses are specifically designed to correct astigmatism, a condition where the cornea is irregularly shaped, causing blurred or distorted vision.
Design: Unlike spheric lenses, toric lenses have different curvatures in different meridians of the lens. This design creates different refractive powers on the vertical and horizontal axes, which helps to correct the uneven curvature of the cornea. Additionally, toric lenses have features to keep the lens stable on the eye, such as thicker zones or specific weights.
